Ginger can be a gloriously sparkly note in perfumery, combining a uniquely effervescent freshness with a warmly simmering, spicy bite. Perhaps we’re all feeling rather burnt out and in need of energising scents right now, because we’ve noticed ginger having a real resurgence now – its sharpness offering a boost of nuanced interest to citrus-y notes, while slicing through sweetness, and smoothing out heavier bases as it goes.

The newer CO2 extractions of ginger allow perfumers to play with a more lifelike freshly sliced ginger root feeling, rather than the dried, flatter spiciness or chewy, candied ginger-ness of previous incarnations. Think of these new ginger essences as a fascinating new sub-category marrying elements of ‘aquatic’ and spicy gourmand families, with a luminous, cleaner, hyper-realistic crispness and the ability to boost more fleeting materials, while also providing a bridge between bubbly top notes and woodier, warmer notes beneath.

Of all the gingers we recommend here, this one is perhaps the most subtly employed, with perfumer Louise Turner adding a gentle yet lasting sparkle of ginger to further buoy aloft the aldehydes – which run like a scented thread through all of Jil Sander’s extraordinary Olfactive 1 series. As the freshness softens, an elegant drift of soft, smoky woodiness settles amidst lofty tree canopies, providing a fascinating fusion of verdancy, fizz and spice to a majestic thrum of deeper woodiness as it warms. Wonderfully floaty and perfectly blended, as ever, Prada’s Les Infusions series is in safe hands with Daniela Andrier. Here, the ginger melds with green mandarin for added get-up-and-go, while the rosy/leafy herbaceous stem-iness of geranium provides a route to the more grounding dried grassiness of vetiver in the dry down. Designed under the creative direction and inspiration of Miuccia Prada, Daniela yet again proves that ‘nature-inspired freshness’ can be simultaneously nuanced and airily wearable.

A fruitier take on ginger, which marries juiciness to a more candied, sweeter scent profile, this could be your new go-to for sluggish mornings and afternoon slumps. Perfumers Amandine Clerc-Marie and Alberto Morillas were the dynamic nose duo tasked with this creation, and it’s a triumph of fruity pink berries bobbing in the stream of ginger’s bubbling sweetness.
