Take 5 Tomato-inspired Home Scents

There’s a bumper crop of tomato-forward home fragrances around right now, each offering a nostalgic yet instantly-uplifting aroma we’re craving to scent our spaces with this summer…

WORDS: SUZY NIGHTINGALE

The viral Loweve Tomato Leaves candle, which sparked the tomato trend

Tomatoes are hugely popular in home fragrance right now, because it turns out we’re craving crisp, green, authentically rustic scents rather than overly ripe fruit or sugar. And the tomato trend has grown way beyond just the smell, segueing from fashion, home textile prints and even makeup colours, the vine-based vibe flourishing so greatly it spawned its own #TomatoGirl aesthetic hashtag movement.

By the way – if you’re wondering what on earth ‘Tomato Girl’ actually means, Google sums up the trend as ‘focusing on Mediterranean holidays, linen dresses, tomato reds, and a carefree, "la dolce vita" lifestyle.’

Well, okay then, what’s not to like? We’re fully on board, tomato leaves and vines being one of our all-time favourite smells here at On The Scent HQ!

As Chef Christopher Matthews noted on Cater-Event, ‘In 2026, ingredients are the story.’ Diners and home cooks (and, we would add, fragrance lovers) alike care deeply about provenance – where their heirloom tomatoes come from and how they are grown. The Bed Threads Journal meanwhile highlights that the trend is ‘driven by nostalgic longing’, serving as a yearning for slower-paced, sun-kissed, beautifully scented European holidays and a slower pace of life.

So, how does this wider cultural trend turn into viral home fragrances? Well, for some years now gourmands have dominated the scent market, but we’re witnessing that trend shift to something more savoury – home fragrances in particular pulling more botanical, and featuring candles, diffusers and room sprays that smell like a living greenhouse or vegetable garden rather than a patisserie counter.

We must tip a nod to LOEWE for really staking this home scents trend, first launching its Tomato Leaves range of home fragrance way back in 2020. Creative director at that time, Jonathan Anderson, (a man with his finger firmly on the pulse, now at Christian Dior) and in-house perfumer Núria Cruelles created the scent as part of the brand's inaugural vegetable-garden-inspired Home Scents collection. Expanding the collection to include soaps, hand washes and hand cream and incense in the scame Tomato Leaves scent, the brand has heroed the once humble heirloom tomato into an iconic luxury symbol, often featuring towering tomato sculptures, greenhouses, and trompe l'œil installations in its flagship stores and pop-ups.

With their distinctive sun-warmed, herbaceously tangy and scent-memory transportive abilities, tomato home scents capture the vivid aroma of fresh tomato leaves and vines, offering a sophisticated, but still hugely nostalgic and tangibly nature-inspired atmosphere. No wonder, then, that many of us are leaning into that comforting yet uplifting aroma and seeking to bring the outside in via these viral, vine-inspired home fragrances.

Here are five tomato home fragrances we suggest scenting your spaces with this summer…

Jo Malone London Tomato Vine Candle (Veggies Edition)

They say: ‘Suddenly you’re transported to summer: that unmistakable green snap of tomato leaves, the crispness of the vine, the earthy freshness of the garden. It’s like throwing open the kitchen windows on the first warm morning of the year. An abundance of sprightly tomato vines release their vibrant, herbaceous aroma and earthy tang. Crafted in a gloss glaze ceramic.’

Grange Aromas Tomato Leaf Room Spray

‘If you love the smell of tomato plants growing in the greenhouse, this one is for you. It’s a unique aroma, not unlike geranium but more unusual. We’ve accentuated the fresh green and citrus top notes with lemon balm and cucumber – and the result is green heaven!’

Norfolk Natural Living Geranium & Tomato Leaf Candle

‘A basket laden with fresh tomatoes rests in the hot midday sun as sweet geraniums are gathered from the sparkling glasshouse. The air is refreshed by the gentle breeze, wafts of lime and eucalyptus cut through the heat. Seeking the cool shade, I wander out into the garden, the bird sings with joy as I recline in the dappled light dancing beneath the fragrant blooms of the neroli tree.’

Lords Fragrance House Heirloom Tomato Shaped Candle

‘Hand-poured from natural soy wax, this candle pairs perfectly with our special glass 'Positano' summer limited edition,’ says founder Sasha Lords. ‘Make the perfect tablescape with tomato fun! Lightly scented with our Positano blend. Tomato vine, basil, mint, bergamot and lemon.’
